The article presents original research based on concrete experience – the setup and management of a co-sewing café by the main author – and conceptualizes how participation in design is enabled through the use and appropriation of materials and stuff provided. It proposes an argument which could open new questions of research, mainly regarding design, open processes of production and participation.
The article discusses a thought-provoking case that is interesting in itself. The figures along with the excellent writing style make for an engaging reading. Blending peer production with participatory design and social practice theory is another important aspect. However, it misses few useful sources from the peer production scholarship.
